First Choice Genetics’ lines have been evaluated with real-time ultrasound since 1998. The service is provided on a third-party basis by McKay Genstat Consultants. Probing is on a bi-weekly basis and services include:

  • longitudinal and cross-sectional scans
  • image analysis of cross-sectional scans that determines loin eye area and shape factor of the loin
  • subjective evaluation of marbling in the loin
  • adjustments for fat depth, loin depth, loin eye area, and age to a 115 kg standard
  • calculation of selection index for males that combines adjusted values for fat depth, loin depth, loin eye area, and age
  • carcass evaluation
  • genetic consulting
